It happened about fifteen years ago.
I am standing in the corridor of the gynecology department of a big hospital, waiting for the arrival of my second grand daughter.
My only grand daughter of two and a half years old, Maya was standing near me waiting to see her new sister. Then we saw a nurse at the end of the corridor bringing the newborn in a trolley on her way to the nursery.
I picked up Maya so that she could see the baby well.
We had a good look at the newborn.
To me she looked like any other newborn baby.
I was very happy. Then I looked at Maya and she was in tears…
I wondered what’s the problem… the usual sibling rivalry?
I tried to console her… but she wouldn’t stop crying … then between her heart breaking sobs I heard, ” I want a white baby, not this one!”
I had a good laugh when I heard her reason.
To me the baby looked like any other newborn, white or black!
Honestly, I couldn’t differentiate the baby’s color.
Even today I couldn’t stop smiling when I think about it.
Oh man! I don’t remember this one bit!
